March is National Nutrition Month, and this year’s theme is “Go Further with Food”. The theme is to inspire us to make healthier food choices while reducing food waste. Plan and prepare foods in advance when possible. By making small changes to the way we think about eating, we can help reduce food waste. We need to balance the beverages we drink and the food we eat to within our energy needs, rather than focusing on one specific food or meal. The lifestyle balance that provides our bodies with the nutrients we need and still eat the foods we enjoy the most. Remember we can freeze extra servings of foods to use in soups and stews instead of throwing it away and increasing food waste. A few key tips to be successful are to carry single-serving packages of healhy snacks, such as dried fruits, nuts, peanut butter and crackers, or granola bars. Try to eat 5 oz of lean meat, poultry, or fish each day. Try to include 1.5 cups (3 servings) of fruits and 2 cups (3-4 servings) of colorful vegetables each day and remember to stay hydrated (7-8 cups of fluids). Consider having a cup to a cup and a half of fluid with each meal and a cup of fluid between meals. By making these small changes over time, you will begin to see lasting health benefits and habits that can be maintained. Dining serves will be highlighting a new healthful food item each day during the month of March in the Independent dining room and Stewart Café for your dining pleasure. There will be Food and Nutrition Word Search puzzles available 3 days each week for your dining entertainment. Prizes will be given out during Resident Council meeting where Emily will raffle off 2 National Nutrition Month prizes instead of 2 desserts. There will also be small prizes given out at the Dining Committee Meeting and Emily or Darren will draw a few names from those that complete the word searches. Posters with this year’s theme will be placed outside the Main Dining Room and Stewart Café on the bulletin board and on the Healthcare Units.
